2010 Vancouver XXI Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony

Apart from a tragedy hours before the Games were opened, the Games were remarkably successful – with more athletes, nations events viewers and reach.

2,566 competitors from 82 nations participated in 7 sports and 86 events over a fortnight. Canada won the gold medal tally with 14, Germany 2nd with 10, USA 3rd with 9, Norway 4th with 9, South korea 5th with 6 gold medals. Canada broke the record for the most gold medals won at a single Winter Olympics. offre coque huawei Hours before the opening ceremony, Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was killed during a training run, intensifying questions about the safety of the course and prompting organizers to implement quick modifications. However, officials concluded that it was an athlete error rather than a track deficiency. coque iphone pas cher However, all other training runs were cancelled for the day. coque samsung s7 edge During the ceremony to light the Olympic flame, only three out of four poles came out of the ground. The athletes were to simultaneously light the base of the poles, which would then carry the flame upwards to the cauldron. Because the site of the ceremonies – BC Place – was a domed stadium, Wayne Gretzky was sent via the back of a pick-up truck to a secondary site – the Vancouver Convention Centre which served at the International Broadcast Centre for these Olympics – to light a larger cauldron of a similar design as Olympic rules state that the flame must be in public view for the entirety of the Olympics. coque huawei pas cher Interesting Points:

  • As in Sydney 2000, opening ceremonies were stalled while organizers dealt with mechanical problems during the cauldron lighting ceremony.
  • Vancouver 2010 was the first winter Olympics in which both men’s and women’s hockey were played on a narrower, NHL-sized ice rink,[94] measuring 200 ft × 85 ft (61 m × 26 m), instead of the international size of 200 ft × 98.5 ft (61 m × 30 m). This saved $10m in construction costs and allowed an additional 35,000 spectators to attend.
  • In Canada, the torch traveled approximately 45,000 kilometres (28,000 mi) over 106 days, making it the longest relay route within one country in Olympic history.
  • For the first time, Canada won gold in an “official” sport at an Olympic Games hosted at home, having failed to do so at both the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary (although Canada won a gold medal in the “demonstration-sport” of curling in Calgary).
  • Canada broke the record for the most gold medals won at a single Winter Olympics.
  • USA broke the record for the most medals won at a single Winter Olympics, with 37.
  • 3 billion television viewers.

2006 Torino XX Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony

With a population of more than 900,000, Turin became the largest city ever to host the Olympic Winter Games. Although the Internet was used widely around the world for the 2006 Torino (Turin) Olympics, and live coverage was available on mobile phones for the 1st time, television ratings dropped from previous Games.

2,508 (960 women, 1,548 men) competitors from 80 nations participated in 7 sports and 84 events over a fortnight. Germany won the gold medal tally with 11, USA 2nd with 9, Austria 3rd with 9, Russian Federation 4th with 8, Canada 5th with 7 gold medals also. achat coque samsung pas cher A total of 19 countries sent just 1 athlete. coque imprimé huawei pas cher It was the first appearance for Albania, Ethiopia and Madagascar. It was also the only appearance at the Winter Olympics for Serbia and Montenegro, coming between their change of name in 2003 and Montenegro’s vote for independence in May. When Sara Renner of Canada broke one of her poles in the cross-country skiing team sprint, Norwegian head coach Bjørnar Håkensmoen lent her one of his (albeit 12cm too long). This act of fair play and sportsmanship allowed Renner to help her team win silver, and dropped Norway out of the medals. There were: Volunteers 18,000 and Media 9,408 (2,688 written press + 6,720 broadcasters). Interesting Points:

  • During the Games period, the web site of the Turin Games Organising Committee, torino2006.org, registered approx. 700 million page views, and the site of the International Olympic Committee, Olympic.org, over 32 million.
  • For the first time, live video coverage of the Olympic Games was available on mobile phones. Including delayed programming, mobile operators provided video coverage in eighteen countries on five continents. In another first, regular television viewers in Mongolia and Azerbaijan were able to watch the Winter Games.
  • Italian police raided the Austrian athletes’ quarter in search of evidence of doping. coque samsung galaxy The raid was conducted due to suspicions over the presence of biathlon coach Walter Mayer, who had been banned from all Olympic events up to and including the Vancouver Olympic Games in 2010 due to previous doping convictions. coque iphone X Around the time of the raid Mayer and two Austrian biathletes, Wolfgang Perner and Wolfgang Rottmann, tried to escape and fled back to Austria. coque huawei nova pas cher Later, the Austrian ski federation president said that the two athletes told him they “may have used illegal methods.” After some days the results of the tests of all 10 tested Austrian athletes were presented and were all negative.
  • The Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games witnessed the most stringent anti-doping controls ever with a record 1,219 tests being administered.
  • Turin became the largest city ever to host the Winter Olympic Games with a population of more than 900,000 – the previous record was 600,000 for Calgary in 1988.

2002 Salt Lake City XIX Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony

The Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games was larger than all previous Games with 77 nations, 78 events, and a record 18 nations earning gold medals.

2,399 (1,513 men, 886 women) competitors from 77 nations participated in 7 sports and 78 events over a fortnight. Norway won the gold medal tally with 13, Germany 2nd with 12, UISA 3rd with 10, Canada 4th with 7, Russian Federation 5th with 5 gold medals also. Norway’s hero was Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, who won all four men’s biathlon events, the first biathlete to win four gold medals at a single Games. Samppa Lajunen of Finland won three gold medals in Nordic combined. coque samsung Switzerland’s Simon Ammann won both the normal hill and large hill ski jumping events, becoming only the second athlete after Finland’s Matti Nykanen to complete the double. German speed skater Claudia Pechstein won two gold medals, including her third consecutive gold medal in the women’s 5000m. By taking the silver medal in singles luge, Georg Hackl of Germany became the first person in Olympic history to earn a medal in the same individual event five times in a row. Australia, which had never won a Winter Games gold medal before, won 2 gold medals in Salt Lake: aerial skier Alisa Camplin and short track speed skater Steven Bradbury in the men’s 1000m. Both would emerge as two of the most popular champions of the Games. China won its first and second Winter Olympic gold medals, both by women’s short-track speed skater Yang Yang (A). Coque huawei Outlet Norway tied the Soviet Union at the 1976 Winter Olympics for most gold medals at a Winter Olympics, with 13. Coque huawei Germany set a record for most total medals at a Winter Olympics, with 36. The Salt Lake Games faced a bribery scandal and some local opposition during the bid, as well as some sporting and refereeing controversies during the competitions. Nevertheless, from sporting and business standpoints, they were among the most successful Winter Olympiads in history; records were set in both the broadcasting and marketing programs – and the Games made a $40m surplus. The Olympic Cauldron was designed with the official motto Light the Fire Within and the Fire and Ice theme in mind. It was designed to look like an icicle, and was made of glass which allowed the fire to be seen burning within. Small jets send water down the glass sides of the cauldron, both to keep the glass and metal cooled (so they would not crack or melt), and to give the effect of melting ice. A second Olympic cauldron burned at the Awards Plaza in downtown Salt Lake City during the games. It was known as the Hero’s Cauldron and was in the backdrop of every awards ceremony. Coque huawei pas cher This was the first time two cauldrons were used during the same Olympic Games. Interesting Points:

  • Australia’s Steven Bradbury won an unforgettable gold in the men’s 1000m speed skating. Competing at his fourth Olympics, Bradbury had overcome some horrific injuries in the years leading up to the Olympics while a number of crashes, mistakes and disqualifications had helped him quietly reach the five-man final. In the final, Bradbury intentionally dropped behind early and trailed the rest of the field by almost a half lap as the four men in front of him bunched around the last turn. But a massive collision sent all four skaters flying, careening into the side of the rink and sliding across the ice. As the only skater left standing, Bradbury crossed the finish line first and was awarded the gold medal.
  • Salt Lake City became the most populous area ever to have hosted the Winter Olympics but was surpassed by Turin in the 2006 Winter Olympics four years later, which itself was surpassed by Vancouver in the 2010 Winter Olympics.
  • Over 2 billion viewers watched more than 13 billion viewer hours.
  • These were the first Games to be held under IOC president Jacques Rogge.
  • The closing ceremonies marked the final live performance of legendary rock band KISS.
  • There was a Canadian dollar underneath the ice in support of the Canadian men’s team, supposedly placed there at the request of Wayne Gretzky, who knew the man responsible for ice upkeep.
  • While there was a lot of international sympathy for the US in the wake of the 9/11 attacks the previous year, there were complaints that the Games were being conducted in an overtly patriotic manner. President Bush received criticism for departing from the Olympic charter by extending the declaration to open the Games, saying “On behalf of a proud, determined and grateful nation” before the traditional formula, “I declare open the Games of Salt Lake City”. In addition, the President opened the games standing among the US athletes, while previous heads of state opened the games from an official box.
  • The 2002 Olympic Torch was modeled after an icicle.
  • This was the first time two cauldrons were used during the same Olympic Games.

1998 Nagano XVIII Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony

In 1998 the Winter Olympic Games returned to Japan, 26 years after the Games were held in Sapporo. More nations and competitors participated than ever before.

2,176 (1,389 men, 787 women) competitors from 72 nations participated in 7 sports and 68 events over a fortnight. coque samsung s8 plus Germany won the gold medal tally with 12, Norway 2nd with 10, Russian Federation 3rd with 9, Canada 4th with 6, USA 5th with 6 gold medals also. The men’s ice hockey tournament allowed professionals to participate for the first time. coques Samsung pas chères However, rather than be a boon for North American teams, with stars such as Canada’s great Wayne Gretzky competing, European teams swept the medals. The Czech Republic won gold, beating Russia 1-0 in the final. Bjørn Dæhlie won three gold medals in cross-country skiing, making him the most-winning Winter Olympic competitor ever. Netherlands won five of the ten speed skating events, including two each by Gianni Romme and Marianne Timmer. Canada beat Denmark in the women’s curling final, securing the latter their first Winter Olympic medal ever. Japanese ski jumper Kazuyoshi Funaki excelled for the host country. He began the Games by winning the silver medal in the normal hill event. On the large hill, he obtained perfect style points from all five judges – an unprecedented achievement – and won the gold medal. coque iphone en ligne He then earned a second gold in the team event as a member of the victorious Japanese squad. Beside him on the gold medal podium was teammate Masahiko “Happy” Harada, one of the most popular jumpers of the time. coque samsung pas cher The spirit of the Games was exemplified by Alpine skier Hermann Maier of Austria. He took a spectacular fall in the downhill, flying off the slope at 120km/h and remaining air-bound for more than 3.5 seconds. He courageously recovered to earn gold medals in both the super-G and the giant slalom. Snowboarding and curling joined the Olympic program, and women’s ice hockey was also introduced. Interesting Points:

  • Professionals were allowed to compete in ice hockey.
  • Women’s ice hockey was contested at the Olympic Games for the first time ever, and the United States, undefeated throughout, beat the Canadians 3–1 for the gold medal.
  • Cross-country skier Bjørn Dæhlie of Norway won three gold medals in Nordic skiing to become the first winter Olympian to earn eight career gold medals and twelve total medals.
  • Tara Lipinski, 15, narrowly beat Michelle Kwan in women’s figure skating to become the youngest champion in an individual event in the history of the Winter Olympics.
  • Snowboarder Ross Rebagliati (Canada) won the gold medal, after initially being disqualified for testing positive for marijuana.
  • Alpine skier Hermann Maier (Austria) survived a fall in the downhill and went on to gold in the super-g and giant slalom.
