The birthplace of modern skiing, Norway was the host for the 1952 Winter Olympic Games at Oslo.
694 (585 men, 109 women) competitors from 30 nations participated in 4 sports and 22 events over a fortnight. Norway continued to top the gold medal tally with 7, USA 2nd with 4, Finland 3rd with 3, Austria 4th with 2 and Germany 5th with 2 gold also.
Speed skater Hjalmar Andersen starred for the host nation, winning three gold medals – his winning margins in the 5000m and the 10,000m were the largest in Olympic history.
