10,318 (6,806 men, 3,512 women) competitors (the first time it topped 10,000) from 197 nations participated (28 more than ever before) in 26 sports and 271 events over a fortnight. USA returned to its winning streak with the departure of the old USSR with a gold medal tally of 44 – the Russian Federation 2nd with 26, Germany 3rd with 20 and China 4th with 16.
New sports include: softball, mountain biking and beach volleyball.
