The 1984 Games are well remembered for the opening ceremony with marching bands, grand pianos and a rocket propelled flying man. It also attracted huge crowds and ran at a profit.
6,829 (5,263 men, 1,566 women) competitors from 140 nations (a record) participated in 23 sports and 221 events over a fortnight. USA convincingly won the gold medal tally with 83 golds – ahead of Romania with 20, the Federal Republic of Germany with 17 and China with 15.
Like the previous Games in Moscow, the Los Angeles Olympics suffered a multi-nation boycott. The Soviet Union led the protest, winning the support of most Eastern European nations, including the powerful teams from East Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary and Poland. The boycott did not affect the Games as dramatically as the previous boycott – more nations than ever participating.
