The 1968 Games in Mexico City were the first Olympic Games to be held at high altitude – 2240m above sea level. The thin air did affect the performance of some athletes.
5,516 (4,735 men, 781 women) competitors from 112 nations participated in 20 sports and 172 events over a fortnight. USA continued its winning streak with a gold medal tally of 45 and also winning the bronze tally with 34. USSR and Japan were 2nd and 3rd respectively.
