The 1956 Winter Olympics were held in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, where, for the first time, there was a massive global television audience. The USSR made a remarkably successful debut.
821 (687 men, 134 women) competitors from 32 nations participated in 4 sports and 24 events over a fortnight. USSR won the gold medal tally with 7, Austria 2nd with 4, Finland 3rd with 3, Switzerland 4th with 3 and Sweden 5th with 2 gold.
The Soviet Union team, on debut, won medal tally with 16 medals, including seven gold. Their speed skaters won three of the four events, while their ice hockey team ended Canada’s domination.
