The 1924 Olympics were originally to be hosted in Amsterdam. The outgoing IOC President Pierre de Coubertin transferred the Games to Paris as a chance to make up for the many difficulties of the Paris 1900 Games.
Paris 1924 did live up to its expectations. 3,089 (2,954 men and 135 women) competitors from 44 nations participated in 17 sports and 126 events over nearly 2 and a half months. USA won the gold medal count with 45 – more than 3 times the next nation.
The main stadium could accommodate a crowd of 60,000. A swimming pool was especially built for competition. The massive number of 625,000 spectators and 1000 journalists attended.
Interesting Points: The Olympic motto, “Citius, Altius, Fortius” (“Swifter, Higher, Stronger”) was introduced, along with the concept of the athletes village, and the Olympic Closing Ceremony with the flag raising ritual – Olympic flag, the Host Nation’s flag, and the next Host Nation’s flag.
