The third modern Olympic Games was originally scheduled for Chicago however in 1902 it was decided to move the Games to St Louis to coincide with the Universal Exhibition and World’s Fair. These Olympics nearly killed the entire Olympic movement.
Due to the fair, the Olympic events were spread out over four and a half months and resulted in 49 of the 91 events only being contested by American athletes.
651 (645 men, 6 women) competitors from 12 nations participated in 17 sports and 91 events. United States won the gold medals count with 77.
Britain and France did not attend due to the expense and logistics of Paris in 1900. The IOC President didn’t even travel to the Games and a later decision was made to never again have the Olympics alongside another international exhibition.
